ML — Megalitre
One million litres. Every storage figure on this site — lake cards, the dashboard headline, the trend chart — is in ML.
MLD — Megalitres per day
A flow rate, not a volume. Mumbai's daily demand is ~3,950 MLD. Dividing stored ML by MLD gives the “days of water left” shown on the dashboard.
MCM — Million Cubic Metres
A volume unit used by Maharashtra WRD. 1 MCM = 1,000 ML. We convert all WRD figures to ML so every number on the site uses the same unit.
LDL — Lowest Dead Level
The point below which water can't reach the outlet pipes by gravity. Storage below LDL is physically present but not usable. A lake card flags this with a warning.
Useful live storage
Total storage minus the dead zone below LDL. The percentage on each lake card is live storage as a share of live capacity — this is what BMC can actually pump.
Percent full
Live storage divided by full reservoir level (FRL) capacity, expressed as a percentage. 100% means the lake is at its design brim. It says nothing directly about how many days of supply remain.
Year-on-year (YoY)
Today's storage compared to the same calendar date in one or more past years. The right-hand card on the dashboard shows this for the last two available years.
24-hour change
The difference in total storage between today's 6 AM report and yesterday's. The ▲/▼ chip on the dashboard headline shows this in both ML and percentage points.
Monsoon season total
Cumulative rainfall at a lake's gauge from 1 June to the report date. Shown as “Season mm” in the lake table. Higher seasonal totals generally mean faster recovery.
BMC — Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
Mumbai's civic body, which owns and operates the seven supply lakes. BMC's Hydraulic Engineer's Department publishes the water stock report at 6 AM daily from Bhandup Complex.
WRD — Water Resources Department
Maharashtra's state agency that manages dams statewide and publishes storage data on the Pravah portal. Source for Barvi, Bhatsa, and the other dams shown on city pages.
NMMC — Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation
The civic body for Navi Mumbai. It sources water from Morbe Dam (CIDCO/NMMC-operated) and Barvi Dam via MIDC. Morbe is not published in WRD's public daily report, so we do not show a figure for it; the Navi Mumbai city page shows Barvi storage only.
MMR — Mumbai Metropolitan Region
The ~6,300 sq km planning area that includes Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding cities. The city pages on this site cover water supply for MMR municipalities.

How Mumbai's water supply works

The lakes, the numbers, and where the data comes from.

Where Mumbai's water comes from

Mumbai's drinking water comes entirely from seven reservoirs in the Sahyadri ranges, collectively called the seven lakes. At full capacity they hold about 1,447,363 ML — enough for roughly a year at current demand. BMC's Hydraulic Department operates the intake works, treatment plants at Bhandup and Pise, and the distribution network that reaches 13 million residents.

Daily demand runs at roughly 3,950 MLD. The lakes are recharged almost entirely during the June–September monsoon; once the season ends, the city draws down whatever was stored. A poor monsoon with no carryover stock from the previous year is the scenario that forces water cuts.

How to read these numbers

Percent full is measured against each lake's full reservoir level capacity — not against any demand figure. A lake at 78% has 78% of its design volume. Two lakes at 78% may not contribute equally to supply if their absolute capacities differ significantly.

Overflowing appears when storage exceeds 100%. Gates open and water spills into the spillway channel. This isn't waste in the engineering sense — the spillway protects the dam — but it does mean the lake can't hold any more rain until levels drop.

The report date is the date of the 6 AM BMC reading. The page headline shows today's calendar date in Indian Standard Time; the storage figures are from the latest filed report, which may be from the previous day if BMC hasn't published yet when you load the page.

The seven lakes

Where the data comes from

Lake figures — stored volume, level, 24-hour change, and rainfall — come directly from BMC's Hydraulic Engineer's Department daily bulletin, issued at 6 AM from Bhandup Complex. We transcribe values verbatim; no interpolation or smoothing is applied.

Dam figures for city pages come from the Maharashtra WRD Pravah portal's daily Major project report — this covers dams such as Barvi, Dhamni (Surya Project), and others across the Konkan and Nashik regions. Because WRD uses MCM and TMC, we convert to ML so the unit is consistent across the site. WRD's public report covers Major irrigation projects only; some Medium and Minor project dams are not included, so those city pages show the dam as pending rather than showing a figure.
